Say No to Speed Bumps in the Northumberland Road Area

Have your say and express your concern to Harrow Council by 17 October about the negative impact of introducing speed bumps in the Northumberland Road area.

Speed bumps are known to cause noise and air pollution, increase damage to vehicles, increase risk of injury to pedestrians and cyclists, as well as other side effects.

This website was created by local residents who welcome the 20 mph zone, however, challenge the council to re-direct funds to more cost effective measures to enforce this.

What's all this about?

Harrow Council have opened a consultation on introducing a 20mph zone within the Northumberland Road area of Harrow, which includes the following roads:

  • Chester Drive

  • Church Drive

  • Grove Road

  • Lancaster Road

  • Lincoln Close

  • Lincoln Road

  • Mount Drive

  • Northumberland Road

  • Suffolk Road

  • The Ridgeway

The zone will include speed bumps to enforce the new speed limit. There is no option for introducing the zone with other less damaging measures, which are also effective at ensuring that drivers comply with the speed limit. This includes signs (including real-time speed indicators), speed cameras, and chicanes.

Local residents have from 6th September until 17th October 2024 to voice their opinion on this proposal. Share your view here: www.talk.harrow.gov.uk/northumberland-road-20mph-zone

The Negative Impact of Speed Bumps

Increased Noise

Speed bumps can increase noise levels by 6 decibels per vehicle  as well as causing vibrations from the impact of driving over the bump, which can be felt by neighbouring buildings.

Bachok et al. 2017; UK Noise Association 2009;

Increased Air Pollution

Speed bumps increase air pollution from 18% to 80% due to vehicles slowing down and speeding up. NICE (National Institute for Care and Excellence) recommend setting 20 mph limits without physical measures such as speed bumps where average speeds are low to avoid drivers unnecessarily changing their speed.

Baltrenas et al. 2016; NICE Guidelines for Reducing Air Pollution 2017

Vehicle Damage

22% of drivers have experienced damage from speed bumps with an average repair of £141, with damage to tyres being the most common.
